Description: The town of Orichalton is between the dawn and the River Lethe in the foothills of the Black Gulch Point. It has many buildings but the biggest is the Basilica in the center of the town. There are priests, too, and work-makers and curers.

Orichalton is good because it is founded in myth. No monster may find itself in its borders except during the Procession of Atonement. There is no crime there. Crime is anathema in Orichalton. Nor are there unbelievers. Unbelievers are anathema.

The Basilica is a three-floored structure of worship where we give thanks to the Godhead. The Godhead is very powerful and blesses us, such that the River Lethe flows into our town in the channels and gives us respite. The Godhead lives below the city and hums softly when he works.

Background: Orichalton was realized in the early thirteenth millennium. The town began small, and is small, and seeks to become large.

There are no records kept of town history in the town hall because writing is forbidden to all but the Godhead. We know our own history from our ancestors, the First Generation1.

Orichalton began as a large fishing town on the river Lethe, and our bait was Unity. We caught many monsters in the woods of Lethe and the waters were grey and calm. There are less monsters now. We are still large.

Our prime achievement is the Basilica, which we built in the eighteenth millennium. The Third Generation brought the wood and stone and glass and the Second forged the holy frame. In the year of its completion, the Godhead leapt within the womb of the Earth and the River Lethe flooded its borders.

Location and Population: Orichalton was once in New York but is now in Montana and will no longer move from its roots. The pathway to Orichalton was scorched in the sixty-seventh Procession and now no man may walk it. We pray to the Godhead daily that Lethe may wash the fires away.

The citizens of Orichalton are divided into classes of priests, work-makers, and curers based on birth.

The priests make the Godhead happy. They remain within the Basilica day and night and pray. They are almost gods themselves. Sometimes, the Godhead takes priests and more need to be trained. Children do not dare go near the Basilica at that time.

The work-makers smile at weaving-wheels and spin clothes or take ores from the mountains or make weapons or re-enforce the barrier wall. They are a happy people and they worship the priests each night, and add their prayers to the holy pyre burning under the earth.

The curers walk through forests and upon the shores of Lethe. They find the sorry monsters and drag them back to home. They work in shadows and cannot be seen from above or below. I am not a curer and I have never seen one. The priests say they are tall and hooded.

The monsters do not escape.

Hunting or Procurement Methods: Orichalton has many methods of hunting monsters, and the primary is the Procession of Atonement. The curers leave the beasts at the gates and we take them in.

The Processions occur once every five years. The monsters are brought from the jail and led down the streets in a line, and all the work-makers look from their windows and sing to them. The words are holy.

The monsters are brought to the public square and the priests surround them in holy fire. Soon their bodies are emptied into the pit and their souls are eaten by the Godhead and no one can see them again.

Five hundred monsters have been cleansed this way and the Forest is almost clean. The curers may rest and remove their hoods.

Encounter Records: Orichalton has encountered many monsters which have joined together with each other. A list follows, informed by the words of the priests in the will of the Godhead.

Monster Anathema
Black-Striders The Black-Striders have many bullets and much fire but they cannot burn down Lethe. The Godhead has protected us. They are of the same type but arm many who are not and these monsters are fierce in nature. The other monsters wear black eye-glasses and do not die in Lethe but do not go in. They all wear black and some white but all black, no gray. They have many mechanisms. The Godhead says that these things are weapons and must be destroyed. The curers have turned back many Black-Striders from the woods.
Madhearts Madhearts once came close to Lethe but now no longer come. They stay away. They come with guns and little ammo but are not deterred easily by fear. They are always in groups, on foot. They have ugly bodies and cannot see the curers before it is too late. A Madheart once fell into the River Lethe and the Godhead became angry. The Godhead says he had the scent of the Prime Aberration2.
Rotten Men The Rotten Men come from the Earth and pour into the River Lethe for retribution. They burn themselves in its waters and disfigure their faces for the Godhead. Some are not as rotten as others and try to swim to Orichalton and drown. They all have two arms and legs and hands and feet, and are very ugly. The Godhead is pleased by their cries.
The Prime Aberration The Prime Aberration is the scourge of Orichalton and killer of the First Generation. He has scorched the path to Orichalton and disrupted the sixty-seventh Procession of Atonement, a holy ritual. His name is anathema in Orichalton. He is anathema. His kind are anathema. His very soul and being and kindness and works and family and children and heart and bone and the soul of his birthplace are anathema. He has wounded the Godhead and fled.

Additional Notes: Sometimes, citizens leave Orichalton.

Sometimes, they hurt people who love them.

Sometimes they do bad things.

But they are not monsters. Not yet.
